White dhokla (Idla)

Canbe made with leftover Idli batter

A nice tea time snack or can be served as a side dish

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings


    • 1 cup Urad dal, soaked in water for 6-8 hrs
    • 2 cups par boiled rice soaked in water for 6-8 hrs
    • 1 tsp green chilli paste
    • 1 tsp ginger paste
    • a pinch of soda bi carb
    • salt to taste
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper pwd
    • 1 tbsp oil
    • 1/2 tsp  mustard seeds
    • 1 tsp sesame seeds
    • few coriander leaves
    • 1 tbsp grated fresh coconut

    Directions

    1. Remove water from dal and rice and grind them separately to a fine paste.Like idli batter.
    2. Mix them together and allow to ferment for 6-8 hrs in a warm place
    3. Mix salt, chilli and ginger paste
    4. Grease a thali .
    5. Fill water in the steamer and allow to boil
    6. Add soda bi carb, mix well and immediately pour in thali, 1 cup at a time
    7. Sprinkle black pepper pwd
    8. Put in the steamer when steam comes out
    9. In 10 min it will be done
    10. Allow it to cool for 5 min and cut
    11. Heat oil, add mustard seeds, after they crackle, add sesame seeds and pour on the dhoklas
    12. Garnish with coriander leaves and grated fresh coconut
    13. Serve with green chutney or idli chutney
    14. For variation moong dal, chana dal can be added

    Thank you very much for the recipe. I am from Atul. My mother used to make the best Idla but I never bother to ask for a recipe when she was around. Now after marriage, I have been looking for the right proprotion of urad dal and rice as all my family members like Idla very much. Thank you once again. I will definately try this recipe.
