Tamarind rice

Also known as Pulihora in Andhra. ‘Puli’ or ‘Pulupu’ in Telugu means ‘Sourness’ and ‘Hora’ comes from the word ‘Ogiramu’ meaning ‘Rice’

Ingredients vegetarian 2 servings


    • 1 cup Rice (cooked)
    • 1/2 cup  tamarind juice
    • 1 tbsp Mustard seeds
    • 1 tsp Urad dal
    • 1 tsp Chana dal
    • 2 red chillies
    • pinch of asfoetida
    • 1/2 tsp tumeric powder
    • 1/2 tsp red chillies
    • 1/2 tsp ginger (nicely chopped)
    • curry leaves
    • little salt to taste
    • 2 tbsp oil-
    • 1 onion (nicely chopped)

    Directions

    1. Heat oil in a pan,add mustard seeds (let it crackle).
    2. then add red chillies, urid dal, chana dal, curry leaves stir fry till it turns it colour
    3. To that add onion, ginger let it fry for a minute
    4. Then add all the ingredients and lower the heat
    5. When this becomes thick gravy; add rice & mix it well.
    6. Serve with boiled eggs.

    In andhra this dish is used as prashad for God. How can you add eggs and onions in that. It is not acceptable my dear.
