Chana Masala

Bengal Gram Curry

Ingredients vegetarian 8 servings

    • 2 cups chana(soaked overnight)
    • 3 tomatoes(peeled and chopped)
    • 3 tsps red or green chilly paste
    • 2 potatoes(boiled and cut into pieces)
    • 3 tbsps raw mango(peeled and cut into small pieces)
    • Salt
    • 1 tsp turmeric powder
    • 2 1/2 tsps garlic paste
    • 2 tsps mustard seeds
    • 10-12 curry leaves
    • 3 tbsps oil
    • 3 tbsps grated coconut
    • Corriander leaves for garnishing


    1. Wash and boil chana with little salt in pressure cooker till just soft. Drain water and keep aside.
    2. Heat oil,add mustard seeds and curry leaves,when they splutter,add tomtoes,garlic,mango pieces,turmeric and chilly paste, saute till tomatoes pulppy.
    3. Add channa, potatoes, grated coconut and salt, mix well, reduce heat and braise for 5 mins.
    4. Add 2 cups of water,cook on medium heat till gravy thick.
    5. Garnish with corriander leaves.
