Puli Aval

light dish out of rice flakes

Can make it in very short time--good when unexpected guests arrive.

Ingredients vegetarian 6 servings

  • 5 cups Pressed Rice
  • 5 nos. Green Chilies
  • 2 nos. Red Chilies
  • Curry Leaf to taste
  • 1 pinch Asafoetida
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds (black)
  • ½ tsp Bengal Gram (split)
  • ½ tsp Black gram (split)
  • 1 tbsp tamarind
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ cup Coconut, dessicated
  • 2 nos. Lentil Wafers

Salt to taste Vegetable oil

Directions

  1. Powder rice flakes in a mixer.
  2. Soak Tamarind,remove juice. Add salt,turmeric pwd and hing pwd to the juice.
  3. Add powdered rice flakes to the above. Mix and keep aside.
  4. In a pan, heat oil, crackle mustard seeds, add chana dal and urad dal. Fry.
  5. Add chopped green chillies,dry red chillies and curry leaves.
  6. Add the rice flakes mixture to the above. Mix well.
  7. In the end add desicated coconut and mix.
  8. Break papad into pieces and deep fry.
  9. Add to the Puli Aval and serve.

Puli in tamil means tamarind and aval means rice flakes and hence the name Puli Aval.

Thanks for the recipe, Poornima! I wonder if you could mention how much water we should add to the aval. I'm not sure if the aval should just be damp with the tamarind wanter or if it should be floating in it.
