I don't think there is a clear answer to this. It depends on place you live, religion you follow and what is culturally accepted.. Technically speaking egg is an animal product but then so is Milk. That is why there are three terms to describe vegetarian diets. Vegan (no animal products are consumed), Lacto-vegetarian (milk is okay), lacto-ovo-vegetarian (milk and eggs are okay). Most vegetarians from indian subcontinent are lacto-vegetarians but then I have so many other indian acquaintance who claim to be vegetarians but consume eggs.
