Spicy Chana Dal

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

  • 1 cup Bengal Gram (split)
  • 1 tbsp Ginger
  • 1 no. Onion, chopped
  • 4 nos. Cloves
  • 4 nos. Cardamom
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 2 sticks Cinnamon
  • 2 nos. Bay leaves
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 no. Red Chilies
  • ½ tsp All spice powder
  • 2 tsps. Butter
  • 2 tbsps. Coconut, dry, chopped
  • 2 tbsps. Cilantro


  1. Wash and soak the dal for an hour (optional).
  2. Put dal, ginger paste, turmeric powder, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, salt and 3 cups of water in the pressure cooker and cook for 15 minutes.
  3. For tempering, heat clarified butter in a pan and add cumin seeds, chili and bay leaves. Let it brown.
  4. Add chopped onions and fry till it turns golden brown.
  5. Next, add coconut and fry about 1-2 minutes, then add garam masala powder.
  6. Quickly mix in the cooked Dal.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with roti or rice.

this dish become more delicious if you add some lauki (bottle gaurd) (cut in small pieces) in it.
