Recipe by Prabha Raghavan of

It can be used in either liquid or solid consistency but as per name chow-chow kuttu, it should be in solid state. It can be mixed with rice or used as a side dish which goes with chapathis.

    • 1 cup Toor Dal
    • 1/2 tsp Asafoetida (Hing) powder
    • 2 tsp Cumin(jeera) seeds
    • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
    • 2 Green Chillies  (cut length wise)
    • 2 tsp Sambar Powder (if required for more spicy)
    • Curry leaves
    • Oil
    • Salt to taste

    Directions

    1. Wash the toordal and cook in a pressure cooker and keep aside.
    2. Cut the chow-chow in small thin pieces and cook it seperately along with some salt and sambar powder and keep aside.
    3. Heat Oil in a pan and put the cumin and mustard seeds, wait until they splutter and add the asafoetida powder and curry leaves.
    4. Then add the cooked chow-chow with a little bit of water and stir the mixture with enough salt for 2 minutes.(do not pour the cooked water into waste, it can be used to make the desired consistency).
    5. After put the cooked toor dal and stir the mixture for 2-3 minutes (if required pour some cooked water) and switch off the heat. Serve hot after garnishing with coriander leaves. Variation: You can even add 1 medium sized onion and 1 tomato after putting the spices and fry and then add the chow-chow and dal. It will increase the flavour.
