Black Sesameseed Idli Powder

Idli Sesameseed Powder(Ezhu Podi)

Recipe by christy gerald of Dubai, AE

A tasty substitute for Idli-Chilli Powder. This recipe is from my Mother-In-Law.This need not be mixed with gingely oil while taken with Idli or Dosa. This Ezhu Podi is my hubby's fav. too(but not mine).

Ingredients vegetarian 1 servings

    • 200gm Sesame seeds-(black)
    • 18-20 whole red chillies-the lengthy ones(or 25 small red chillies)
    • 2 tsp asafoetida powder
    • 2 sprigs curry leaves
    • lemon sized tamarind
    • 4-5 garlic pearls(optional)
    • 2 tsp salt or more
    • 2 tsp refined oil

    Directions

    1. Clean the sesame seeds removing dirt if any and dry saute 3-4 mins till a nice aroma arises.
    2. Add little oil and saute the chillies for a min and then add the curry leaves and saute for a min more.
    3. Leave it for 10 mins and then grind the dry-sauted sesame seeds with other ingredients except oil and store this in a container.
    4. U can use it with Idli or dosa on those days - u can't do chutneys.

Hi Rabz, try this one first since North-Indians don't take chillies much. But ,the other one is tastier and more spicy(mix that with 1 tbsp gingely oil for 1 tsp Idli Chilli powder-while taking with Idlis).
