Steamed Lentil Cake

Nutritious and delicious appetizer

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

  • 3 cups Rice
  • 2 cups Bengal Gram (split)
  • 1 cup Yoghurt, sour
  • 3 nos. Green Chilies
  • 1 pinch Mustard seeds (black)
  • 1 pinch Sesame Seeds
  • Coconut to taste, ground
  • Curry Leaf to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing
  • 1 pinch Baking Soda
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Soak rice and channa dal overnight.
  2. Grind it and add the curd and salt. Leave it for 5 to 6 hrs to ferment
  3. Mix green chilli paste to it.
  4. Boil water in a big container for steaming.
  5. Meanwhile grease a thali and put a pinch of soda to it, put 3 tbsp of the batter on the thali and mix it well.
  6. Steam the dhokla container till the cake is set and cooked.
  7. Remove and cut it in squares when its cold.
  8. for tempering:
    Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, sesame seeds and curry leaves and green chillies.
  9. Spread this oil over dhokla pieces and decorate it with corriander leaves and grated coconut.

hi, just to confirm, all it takes is a pinch of soda for the whole batter, and can the whole amount of batter be steamed in one thali....thanks for your reply in advance

hi neha, i love dhokla, but due to certain dietry restrictions, i cannot have baking soda, pls suggest an alternative or if i can do without it. thanks a ton and waiting for your divine intervention!!!
