Lentil Soup

This is a simple and standard way to prepare Mung Dal. Thisrecipe is for beginners who are new into Indian cooking.

Ingredients vegetarian 4 servings

  • 1 cup Green Gram (split)
  • 3 tsps. Clarified Butter
  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida
  • 3 nos. Green Chilies
  • piece Ginger, small piece
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Directions

  1. Wash and pressure cook Mung Dal with little water and turmeric powder. Heat Ghee in a kadai.
  2. Add jeera and let it brown a little.
  3. Now add chilli and Ginger followed by Hing powder.
  4. Add boiled dal into it and cook on slow fire after adding salt.
    Simmer well.
  5. Garnish with green coriander leaves.

Sorry geeta, but this recipe is for Indian cooking "newbies" but you don't explain what the ingredients are! How to clarify butter? I don't know what any of the ingredients are. I love Indian food, esp. North Indian. I have several Sindhi friends from when I lived in Singapore, just returned from Toronto where I visited my closest Indian friend and her family. I ate dal like it was going out of style! Also idli and potato dosai,yum. But how to make it all? Please describe the ingredients in plainer english ok? Thanks.
