Thakkali chutney

Ingredients non vegetarian 4 servings


    • 5 big sized tomatoes
    • 8 - 10 sambar onions (small onions usually used for sambar)
    • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    • salt to taste
    • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
    • 1 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/4 tsp chana dal
    • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
    • 1/4 tsp black pepper seeds
    • few curry leaves
    • 2 - 3 tsp of white vinegar
    • 2 tsp cooking oil

     

    Directions

    1. Peel the onions and cut into pieces.
    2. Cut the tomatoes into big pieces.Remove its seeds while cutting it.
    3. In a cooking vessel , add chopped tomatoes , onions , turmeric powder , chilli powder , salt and enough water and boil it for around 5 to 10 minutes. Don't keep it watery. The water should have got absorbed fully.
    4. Let it cool.
    5. Now grind it coarsely (neither too coarse nor too fine).
    6. In a kadai, add oil. When its heated, add mustard seeds. allow it to crackle. Now add cumin seeds , chana dal , curry leaves, black pepper seeds.fry for a minute.
    7. Add the ground tomato paste.
    8. Stir well.cook for few minutes.
    9. At the end, add vinegar and cook for 2 minutes.
    10. Serve with idli / dosa or chapati.

    Hi hfshama!,adding pepper corns and vinegar twist this tomato chutney to a better taste really.
